What beam design is best for my application?

There are several beam choices that are popular. Most commonly used are H beam and I beam styles. Less common are A beam and X beam. Most factory rods are I beam design and this was done to aid in forging for manufacturing. This design is very strong, but tends to be slightly heavier than an H beam. The I beam has preferable windage characteristics over an H beam though. However, most people choose the H beam due to weight and strength characteristics. We're not saying H is stronger than I, but you can have a lighter H that is just as strong as the I beam! A beams are for lower horsepower applications that require a very light rod. X beam rods, while being strong design, tend to be very heavy, as if they are lightened they become weak.

What rod bolts should I use?

We exclusively use ARP rod bolts in all of our connecting rods, ranging from ARP 8740 up to Custom Age 625. Most steel rods use ARP 2000, L19, or Custom Age 625, but call us and we'll help you figure out the right rod bolt for your application.

Do I need an angled cap or bolts that come in from the pin end side of the rod?

The angled cap is used to fit on small bore applications, typically for clearance reasons. Aircooled Porsche and aircooled VW applications use a "backwards" bolt as it is tightened from the head side of the engine due to clearance requirements for the connecting rod in the engine block.

What is the difference between a forged and billet steel connecting rod?

Forgings are easier and cheaper to manufacture and until CNC machining became popular, this was the only economical way to manufacture an steel connecting rod. Billets actually cost more, but the finished product is actually stronger. Part of this is due to how the billets are manufactured, as billets allow for directionality of the grain structure and due to our ability to buy in volume directly from the steel mill, we can tailor the billets to our specification done by our metallurgist. Same goes with a forged versus billet crankshaft - billet is always better!

Can I run my rods without a pin end bushing or can the pins be press fit?

Yes. If you run a DLC coated wrist pin, you can can run without a pin end bushing. This may be used to save weight or provide extra clearance. Pins can also be set up for press fit, just do not exceed 700°F! We recommend you send us your wrist pins for proper pin fit.

What clearances do I run with a billet steel connecting rod?

Typically factory clearances work very well. However, if using higher viscosity oil than the manufacturer recommendations, additional bearing clearances may be needed.

What rod is best for my engine? Should I use a steel, titanium, or aluminum connecting rod?

Typically street, strip, and diesel engines will require a steel connecting rod, as they are the most economical for these applications and will provide a long service life exceeding that of OE connecting rods. For high rpm applications requiring a light rod, titanium rods work well but are cost prohibitive and need to be replaced as they fatigue like an aluminum rod. We can make a very light steel connecting rod for these applications, while aluminum rods will provide the weight savings of a titanium rod at a fraction of the cost of either steel or titanium. Aluminum rods are primarily used for drag racing, however they frequently are used in street and diesel applications, but have fixed life cycles requiring replacement before failure.

Why do our steel connecting rods cost more than our competition?

We use only certified American-made alloys and all machining is done 100% in-house in Grant Park, IL,  in the United States. Also our rods go through a very extensive heat treat, tempering, and cryogenic treatment process, resulting in strengths that double that of our competition. Although visually most aftermarket rods look similar, the metallurgical properties of an R&R connecting rods are far superior.

Do I want to use the torque or stretch method for tightening my rod bolts?

The stretch method is always better, but sometimes you are unable to do it or don't have the time to do it between races. If your stretch method specification is not shown above, please call, as this information is available. Additionally, when using the stretch method, it is possible to check for a rod bolt that has gone bad, as it will not come back to its original length measurement, as it remains permanently stretched beyond its elastic limit.
